The sci-fi novel I'll never write.

In which there’s a vague overview.

The character that’s been living in my head for the last decade is an alien.

The premise is that extraterrestrials have always been here; a ship (which happens to be self-aware and is currently hidden from human satellite surveillance at the bottom of the ocean) crashed on earth during the time of the pharaohs. The beings on it were capable of extreme self-directed genetic mutation. Being bilaterally symmetrical, they made themselves look like humans and have been here the whole entire time, a secret subculture among us.

They have their own government and social hierarchy. They have wealth, access to advanced tech they can use but not produce, and lab-like enclaves around the globe. They live among us, worldwide. There are about five million of them.

They had their own version of the Prime Directive, but they certainly didn’t hesitate to direct the shape of human science. After all, they had a freakin’ supraluminal spaceship and we didn’t even have steam engines yet, let alone anything that would help them get their boat back into space, so one could argue that they had to help where they could.

Some of our greatest scientists? Are them. Reinventing the wheel.

Languages around the world contain words we’ve learned from them. Insert a lot of sci-fi genre jokes… Roddenberry would have known one of them, for instance, and many Star Trek words and concepts would actually be out of their culture. They’d be the source of Heinlein’s “grok,” as they’d eat portions of their dead in order to avoid genetic flaws.

Human behavior that makes little sense would have been learned from them. They mate for life. When one of the pair dies, the other dies as well, so it turns out that they actually introduced humans to life-long commitments because they have a biological drive to pair up even though we don’t.

They’re dual-gendered like humans, but for reasons unknown to them they quit having daughters a generation after arriving and have been breeding with us for thousands of years. They breed true because they have incomprehensibly long, complex DNA. I have no idea how to explain that, but humor me here.

They’re called T’Kaa (though it would probably be better if I chose a well-known alien race name out of sci-fi cannon). They even go into kemmer (nod to LeGuin), a hormonal/sexual state during which they achieve, say, adolescence, or mate-bonding, or conception.

The character in my head is one of these aliens. His family has been breeding for beauty and intelligence for well over five thousand years; he is an omnibus prodigy and has multiple unrelated PhDs by the time he’s a teenager, including one in music performance of classical guitar. In his early twenties he blossoms into a phenomenon that even his own species hasn’t seen in three thousand years: massive strings of dormant DNA activate and he becomes a walking miracle… or menace, depending on how you look at him.

He can manufacture anything he wants in his own body and secrete it any way he likes; he can compel all members of his own species at will, and humans too (only with less subtlety), by simply sweating or breathing. He could, if he wished, manufacture a plague and exhale it into the world, wiping the face of the earth of all life. He can heal his own body of any illness or injury. He’s a genius. He’s insanely rich. He’s terrifyingly powerful.

He’s also a pop star, who basically keeps himself famous by filling concert halls with excellent pheromones. Everybody loves him. His orgies are legendary.

He’s called a sh’corne, which is a type of creature that only emerges when there’s a great need for one. Past bearers of the title have stopped plagues, healed millions, and changed the course of T’kaa history.

He has authority among his own kind by virtue of his House (although he’s House Mondavi, not Atreides), what he is genetically, and their own biological imperative to obey him because of both, but most of them think he’s fairly ridiculous. No one knows why a sh’corne has manifested since there doesn’t seem to be a particular threat against the T’kaa.

Then it turns out that the ship – repository and Archive of all things known to both species – needs to be moved; seismic activity indicates that she’s about to fall into a terminally deep fissure in the bottom of the ocean.

So a flurry of activity among the T’Kaa occurs and the upshot is that our hero, the pop icon Jake Mondavi, goes on TV amd says, “Hey, I know y’all think I’m a rock star, which I am, but it turns out I’m also not human. Here’s the documentation of my weird physiology etc etc etc. Oh, and we need help from several earth governments to move our mothership before she falls into a freakin’ chasm where we can’t get to her ever again.”

And hilarity ensues as humanity realizes that it’s been manipulated by aliens for all of recorded history, and that a bunch of us are actually them.

Music and media.

In which I gig and consume media.

Friday night I waited for nearly an hour for my bro to finish an instance in WoW, then we went to Rosita’s for dinner. Mmm, chile rellenos!

I went to bed early Friday night because I was tired from going out Wednesday and Thursday.

Saturday I woke up at nine. It really pissed me off, so I went back to sleep until eleven. I got my nails done Saturday afternoon. (My nail tech lady told me my skin looked bad and that I needed to cut back on the caffeine and cigs and drink more water. I was all, ‘Uh, okay lady. Will do.’)

After my manicure I went to meet Lannie and Becca at the bar. Not long after arriving I got a call from RB. He said, “Wanna make fifty bucks?” Of course I did!

Basel Wedding Gig

I drove out to Basel Cellars and sat in with the Coyote Kings, who were playing for a wedding reception. The food was good, the wine was free, and at the end of the night one of the caterers gave me an entire cheesecake.

Fifty bucks and a cheesecake for singing nine songs? Good deal!

Sunday I laid around like a slug. I watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on Netflix. (Such a great movie! I’d never seen it before. Loved it.) I repainted my nails because I just couldn’t hack the very whorish dark color I’d chosen at the salon.

I finished reading Ghost Sunday night, even though the book pissed me off endlessly. I realize it’s fiction and therefore fantasy, but Jesus H Christ! I do NOT like gang rape, torture, and murder so graphically portrayed in my fiction… particularly not when both the main character and the author obviously find it sexually arousing! Gah! Sci-fi should not have smut in it! Well, more specifically: I don’t actually mind smut in my sci-fi, but I prefer it not to be pathological smut. I like my smut consensual, thank you very much.

There’s a scene where a group of naked chained co-eds are forced to watch the gang rape, torture, and murder of a couple of their number. Then when the good guys show up, one of them – the good guys, I mean – gives a speech about how not all men are assholes and the girls had better not turn into dick-slicing lesbians who won’t give head.

WTF?! In which universe is such a speech even remotely acceptable when delivered to a room full of naked women, two or three of whom were tortured to death?!?!

Sure, I’m against militant feminists as much as any woman can be. But I’m ALSO against idiots militant masculinists. Let’s all be humanists, shall we?

I bought the next book in the series but I’m not gonna read it. Not if there’s going to be such nasty misogynistic rape-fueled sex in between super awesome action scenes. Ugh.

Other random items: ~My dog is awesome. ~G’ma made a really delicious salad thing for dinner last night, composed of a bed of iceberg, diced beefsteak tomatoes, and a mayo dressing mixed with cucumbers on top. ~I’m drinking a LOT of water today. ~I have a zit on my nose, even though I’m far too old for such nonsense. ~It doesn’t matter how much I diet and exercise, I am apparently never going to have a waist ever again. ~I’ll be sitting in with the Kings at their album release party at Sapolil‘s tasting room next Saturday night. ~My boss left a pile of mail on my desk and left town, and I’m only vaguely aware of what I’m supposed to do with it. ~I shot a roll through one of my Argus C3s this weekend and can’t wait to get it developed.

The Brick in the truck

Heighth, width, depth.

In which the sci-fi I’m reading totally fucking sucks, but I was lying in bed trying to watch a vid the other day and got irritated with the fact that I had to have my head upright in order to feel comfortable.

Being a creature from the bottom of a gravity well means that in order to think about something I must first be able to orient it. This is an awful waste of space.

I wonder what a truly 3-dimensional thought process would feel like. Not even sea creatures are free of up-versus-down.

Technical Difficulties. And Torchwood. OMFG, Torchwood.

In which I complain a little.

First of all, at the new job I still don’t have a desk or computer of my own, or logins for everything I need to be logged into. But there’s a computer now with my name on it, and a space that I’ll be moved into by the end of the week! Whee!

Then the construction guys will come and knock out a wall and eventually there will be space for a proper desk, and if I’m lucky they’ll order a proper desk sooner rather than later and give it to someone so that I can have their desk and then I’ll be able to bring the R/C Dalek to work. Finally!

Second of all, I can’t send images from my cell phone to Flickr. I could go into excruciating detail about this issue – you know I could! – but I won’t because it’s boring and I love you too much. I’ll just tell you that yes, I’ve done all the basic troubleshooting and I even went to the Sprint store (it’s next door to my new office) for help, but they didn’t know what to do beyond calling tech support and having them delete and recreate my Sprint Picture Mail account… which has three years’ worth of images in it. Boo. Hiss.

I’m carrying a USB cable in my purse now because not being able to send pics is seriously cramping my style.

In other news, I watched the long-awaited five-episode Torchwood extravaganza Children of Earth this weekend (if you haven’t seen it yet, it airs on BBC America next week) and it was all of the following:

* really, really good TV!
* riveting
* very dark
* response-generating

But. [SPOILER ALERT!!!] I mean, we all knew that working for Torchwood is the most dangerous job in the world and that everybody was in danger every moment, but hello?! You’re just not supposed to kill off OVER HALF YOUR MAIN CHARACTERS in a mere seven episodes! Seriously! People can’t fucking handle it!

The only person who hasn’t died at least once is Gwen. Tosh died once, Ianto died twice, Owen died twice, and I quit counting how many times Jack had died by the end of the first season. I mean, the M*A*S*H characters were in the middle of a goddamned war for eleven years and only one or two of them ever died… which is hardly authentic but people don’t like it when you kill off their beloved main characters.

The Torchwood fan base is going absolutely batshit and it really sucked knowing that there wasn’t going to be a bad dream reset in episode 5. And then! The last four minutes! Please! “Six months later” and Jack leaves the planet. WTF?! I realize that Torchwood is a vehicle for Jack, but he has to be on earth or it isn’t Torchwood – it’s The Jack Harkness Show. Additionally, I read that RTD is moving to the States, so I don’t have high hopes for the franchise now.

Which is why my torrent client is currently running at home, downloading the episodes I need to complete my collection.

Ah, Torchwood, Torchwood, Torchwood, how I love to hate you.

I am obsessed with Torchwood.

In which I go on and on and on about a fucking TV show. Srsly. Me, the girl who loathes television. Don’t even read this.

I have a BF who has satellite and an HD television and we could spend all kinds of time just watching what’s on, but we don’t. We watch DVDs of Torchwood.

Torchwood, if you’re not familiar with it, is a BBC show. It’s a spinoff from the Doctor Who universe, with several characters appearing in both series. It was created by the new Doctor Who’s producer, Russell T. Davies. The show was developed almost entirely as a vehicle for John Barrowman (who first appeared as Captain Jack Harkness opposite the ninth Doctor). Harkness is the first acknowledged non-het character in the Who universe, and he makes up for it by basically shagging everything he sees, be it girl, boy, or alien.

I love Torchwood because it’s total entertainment crack.

It’s British, which means accents (which means that any and all utterances sound more profound than they truly are). It’s sci-fi, so not only do we get to examine deep themes but we don’t notice we’re doing it since there are monsters and aliens and gadgets and wonderfully cheesy special effects. (This is actually why I love sci-fi: I think it’s the bestest context for playing around with existential questions.) And, best of all, it’s got more snogging and shagging than any other sci-fi series I’ve ever seen… and I’ve watched a million hours of sci-fi so I know what I’m on about.

For instance, in last night’s episode (season 2, episode 11) Gwen rushes back to The Hub to speak with Jack about a case. She bursts into his office, only to find him half-dressed and snogging a similarly unclothed Ianto. She backs away, stammering, but they pull themselves together and rush out after her.

Jack: Gwen! There’s always room for one more! We could have used you an hour ago for naked hide-and-seek.
Ianto: He cheats. He always cheats.

Ianto is my favorite character and gets all the best snarky asides.

The good news is that Torchwood didn’t get axed after its second season, and will be returning for a partial third. The bad news is that after we watch episodes 12 and 13 tonight, we’ll have only the special left until the third season is aired NEXT SPRING! OMGWTFBBQ!!!1!! What am I supposed to DO with myself until then?!?

The name ‘Torchwood’ is an anagram of ‘Doctor Who.’ (The name was used on the dailies and rushes when the ninth Doctor’s show was in pre-production so people wouldn’t know what they were and leak clips to the public. Davies later wrote the name into the Who series in preparation for the spinoff.) I love Torchwood and will probably begin the series again at the beginning and watch the whole thing again twice before Spring!

Apparently, the folks at CERN are also huge Torchwood fans.

"A single, absolutely verified theophany"

In which I respond here because I’m no longer in college.

valisI’m reading one of the late Philip K. Dick‘s final three works: a wild tour of drugs, insanity, and longing called VALIS.

While the characters – so far at least – are so engaging that it’s worth reading, there’s a great deal of vocabulary. Some of it is off-putting, because I already possess a reasonably massive vocabulary, with as solid a relationship with modern English’s predecessors as a product of public schooling can reasonably expect to have, but on some pages there will be three or four – or even more – words I need to look up. Is this communication, or is it masturbation? Who was he writing for? (And will I ever be one of them?)

It doesn’t escape me that the more words one has, the more topics one can think about… I mean to say, can we think about something without having first fashioned words to describe it? I don’t think we can. So: esoteric topics require their own jargon. Fine.

Anyway. Point is, athiests: always pissed off because [1] they can’t force themselves to experience God the same way they can force material things to interact; [2] the existence of suffering in the world upsets them so much that no clear thinking can be done about God or love after the topic of pain is introduced; [3] they require physical, dimensional proof of a force that possesses neither characteristic directly (but only indirectly, as a side-effect); and, [4] if they’re thinky, they tend to go on and on obfuscating and defining and defending and thrashing about and making the entire thing so fucking achingly complicated that no one has the energy to enter into meaningful dialog with them. Which they take to mean they’re right. Continue reading "A single, absolutely verified theophany"

Earning My Stalker Card

In which I use my powers for evil good.

You know I’m a whore for the hard sci-fi, right? Totally devour the stuff. By the metric ton. It’s a big part of my free time, the sci-fi is, so I’m gonna talk about it. If you don’t read sci-fi, you can safely skip this whole entry.

I just finished a Greg Bear novel called Psychlone and it utterly sucked, and so did the last new Bear, Quantico, and, I mean, well, damn. Because I used to love Bear. Infinity Concerto was so wonderful I’ve read it thrice (I rarely re-read, plus I don’t even like fantasy). I loved Eon and Darwin’s Radio and Slant, and he just used to write such good sci-fi.

But Psychlone? Ugh. IMO the premise was weak, the characters didn’t even like themselves, and the denouement failed to satisfy. It was a terrible disappointment. It’s well-crafted and expertly written, of course, but it just didn’t work for me. I don’t think the author himself even knew quite what it was he was trying to convey, because I certainly couldn’t tell and I’m deep. (Snort.) A scientific basis for demons? Okay, fine, but please. Just… please. Finish defining your universe before you start breaking it.

So the Bear novel broke my heart and to cheer myself up I broke into the William Barton I’d bought recently and was hoarding. It’s called Acts of Conscience and I’ve devoured half of it in 24 hours… and oh, yeah, yeah, it’s good. I love Barton. Looooove him.

So I went surfing for more information, because I’ve decided I’m going to read the rest of Barton’s backlist. This year. All of it. Because that’s just how I roll when I find a yummy new-to-me author.

Enter the confusion: there were problems, people. Where the hell is the info on this guy? Not highly indexed, that’s for certain: I found a bio on Librarything combining this Barton’s work with the work of two other writers of the same name, a domain name with no content (!!!), and a google hit six pages deep about a SQL programmer who writes sci-fi and may or may not be the author I’m stalking looking for.

How in the hell, I ask you, is a devoted reader supposed to stalk learn about an author what ain’t hardly on the Innartubez whatsoevar? Christ. Man’s been published since the 70’s and there’s hardly a pinch of info on him! His wikipedia entry is comprised of fewer than one hundred words, there appears to be a 14-year hole in his release schedule, and I had to update his Librarything page myself for fuck’s sake!

I ran searches in three different engines, mined the isfdb, read the blurb in the back of the book I’ve got and triangulated the author’s town of residence with the registration on the domain name, and… hah. Gotcha.

And I emailed him.

Which is a big deal for me, ’cause I’m shy about my sci-fi authors. Once I emailed Sarah Zettel, though, and she emailed me back. But as a rule I avoid the boards where the writers hang out, and don’t send fan mail. (No comments from the peanut gallery on my use of the word ‘shy,’ now. The fact that I’d’ve walked up to Miles Davis and asked to borrow a dollar without batting an eyelash simply means that I’m not afraid of musicians. Writers are entirely different. Probably ’cause I ain’t one of them.)

Now ‘scuse me plz while I go read.
