Gigs, boys, being boring for health, and books.

In which I’m so boring I did laundry AND cleaned my room AND went to bed early last night.

[dropcap]L[/dropcap]ast weekend was the first annual Walla Walla Guitar Festival. It was a raging success, especially considering this was its first year; we sold out and everything!

I had a fantastic time, and seriously loved having so many players in town at once — I spent at least three hours just hanging out in the green room chatting with the other players.

Here’s an image of my performance with Coyote Kings. We opened the festival:

Coyote Kings w/Mush feat Kenny 'Blue' Ray

(The amazing Kenny ‘Blue’ Ray sat in with us, as did Cookie, but they’re not in this picture.)

I got hit on by — not one, but two — boys in their 20’s. It was, for reasons I can’t articulate and suspect are entirely due to being socialized, immensely gratifying.

(I went home alone, of course.) (What? What am I going to do with a boy in his twenties? Be jaded at him?) (Also, I couldn’t care less about sex, to be honest.)

Yes, I’m still quitting smoking.

I do not want to do this, and I am not at all gung ho and positive about it: I just don’t want to have to pull a goddamned tank of oxygen around with me at the grocery store when I’m 45.

Quitting means that, for awhile, my life consists of two things: Being At Work, and Being At Home. There are no other portions, because Other Portions (read: having any kind of social life whatsoever) cause me to lame out and smoke.

In other words, I really try not to but I still bum cigarettes in many social circumstances. But, since this is Still Better Than Smoking Every Day, I am counting it A Triumph every time I get to put ‘Cigs: 0’ on my Google calendar, even if it’s only Five or Six, and not Seven, Times each week.

I’ve been smoking for a long time. (Hell, I’ve been quitting for a long time.) Baby steps. Self-isolating, new-habit-building baby steps.

Not smoking means not drinking, because drinking makes me smoke. Cutting out both for the last month means I have extra munny.

I added up that unspent money and spent it on clothes. I’m expecting a new skirt, thigh high socks, tights, and a long sleeved t-shirt by Friday.

(Since I now ride a bike everywhere, I’ve decided to experiment with a short skirt-and-tights look for those parts of the year that are not winter. All my current skirts are floor length, and periodically get caught in the chain and threaten my life thereby. Boo!)

I also bought two cheap bikinis, because mine are older than the boys who hit on me last weekend, and seriously need to be replaced. (Of course I’m too old to hang out in bikinis a lot, I realize that, but I do wear them under other things, particularly at summer gigs.)

Yesterday after work I didn’t want to go straight home, so I stopped for a latte. Here’s a picture of my Kindle Fire tablet and my cuppow at Starbucks:

Cuppow

I know, right?

I’m reading a huge amount of non-fiction right now. All of the following are currently in heavy rotation on my tablet:

Grooming, Gossip, and the Evolution of Language by Robin Dunbar – This is the Dunbar’s Number guy, and his premise is that we evolved language in order to gossip in order to be able to manage larger groups.

The Panic Virus by Seth Mnookin – This is indirectly about that idiot who inadvertently brought back a bunch of nearly-eradicated childhood diseases by making false claims against the MMR vaccine, and about vaccination and science in general.

Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner – People kept telling me to watch the movie so I did and it was okay so I bought the book thinking it’d have, like, moar insight, but it doesn’t appear to. Sorta meh about this, considering JUST HOW EXCITED people were when they told me about it.

Liars & Outliers by Bruce Schneier – This is a book about trust, society, security, and cryptography, and interestingly it’s a lot like Dunbar’s book about how humans build society.

AdWords for Dummies by Howie Jacobson – A bullshit book written by someone who obviously has been hocking crap via spam and infomercial for the past decade.

They’re all awesome (except for the last one, which completely sucks and which I will not finish. I was supposed to read it for work, but honestly, that POS is un-fucking-readable and it has pretty much soured me on the entire For Dummies franchise) and if you want to borrow any of them (in Kindle format), just let me know.

Tonight, I’ll get off work at six and ride my bike home. I’ll stretch, read, meditate, eat tostadas, and knit while watching ancient episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I will go to bed early. I will not smoke. It’ll be awesome*.

* Where “awesome” equals OMFG GIVE ME A GODDAMNED CIGARETTE ALREADY.

Music and media.

In which I gig and consume media.

Friday night I waited for nearly an hour for my bro to finish an instance in WoW, then we went to Rosita’s for dinner. Mmm, chile rellenos!

I went to bed early Friday night because I was tired from going out Wednesday and Thursday.

Saturday I woke up at nine. It really pissed me off, so I went back to sleep until eleven. I got my nails done Saturday afternoon. (My nail tech lady told me my skin looked bad and that I needed to cut back on the caffeine and cigs and drink more water. I was all, ‘Uh, okay lady. Will do.’)

After my manicure I went to meet Lannie and Becca at the bar. Not long after arriving I got a call from RB. He said, “Wanna make fifty bucks?” Of course I did!

Basel Wedding Gig

I drove out to Basel Cellars and sat in with the Coyote Kings, who were playing for a wedding reception. The food was good, the wine was free, and at the end of the night one of the caterers gave me an entire cheesecake.

Fifty bucks and a cheesecake for singing nine songs? Good deal!

Sunday I laid around like a slug. I watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind on Netflix. (Such a great movie! I’d never seen it before. Loved it.) I repainted my nails because I just couldn’t hack the very whorish dark color I’d chosen at the salon.

I finished reading Ghost Sunday night, even though the book pissed me off endlessly. I realize it’s fiction and therefore fantasy, but Jesus H Christ! I do NOT like gang rape, torture, and murder so graphically portrayed in my fiction… particularly not when both the main character and the author obviously find it sexually arousing! Gah! Sci-fi should not have smut in it! Well, more specifically: I don’t actually mind smut in my sci-fi, but I prefer it not to be pathological smut. I like my smut consensual, thank you very much.

There’s a scene where a group of naked chained co-eds are forced to watch the gang rape, torture, and murder of a couple of their number. Then when the good guys show up, one of them – the good guys, I mean – gives a speech about how not all men are assholes and the girls had better not turn into dick-slicing lesbians who won’t give head.

WTF?! In which universe is such a speech even remotely acceptable when delivered to a room full of naked women, two or three of whom were tortured to death?!?!

Sure, I’m against militant feminists as much as any woman can be. But I’m ALSO against idiots militant masculinists. Let’s all be humanists, shall we?

I bought the next book in the series but I’m not gonna read it. Not if there’s going to be such nasty misogynistic rape-fueled sex in between super awesome action scenes. Ugh.

Other random items: ~My dog is awesome. ~G’ma made a really delicious salad thing for dinner last night, composed of a bed of iceberg, diced beefsteak tomatoes, and a mayo dressing mixed with cucumbers on top. ~I’m drinking a LOT of water today. ~I have a zit on my nose, even though I’m far too old for such nonsense. ~It doesn’t matter how much I diet and exercise, I am apparently never going to have a waist ever again. ~I’ll be sitting in with the Kings at their album release party at Sapolil‘s tasting room next Saturday night. ~My boss left a pile of mail on my desk and left town, and I’m only vaguely aware of what I’m supposed to do with it. ~I shot a roll through one of my Argus C3s this weekend and can’t wait to get it developed.

The Brick in the truck

Reading List

In which I’ve decided, in an effort to keep my mind from rotting in my head, to read, or in most cases re-read, the following works. This list is incomplete.

Shakespeare
Sonnets (in progress)

Oscar Wilde
The Ballad of Reading Gaol (done)
The Picture of Dorian Gray (done)
The Portrait of Mr. W.H. (done)
An Ideal Husband
Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime (done)

Plato
The Republic

Xenophon
Anabasis
The Memorable Thoughts of Socrates

The awesome part about reading public domain works is that I can download them (using Stanza on my iThing) from Project Gutenberg for free!

I feel like half a person. The weird half.

In which this post is about books, bleeding, and the stupid seminar we’re taking at work.

My aunt left a pile of paperbacks for me after my surgery. Mostly Koontz stuff, and a couple mysteries and political thrillers. Not the kind of things I usually read but it’s all I’ve got. I’ve been reading one every day and a half. I finished one last night, right before I went to sleep.

Then I slept… for eleven hours.

I woke up, checked the time, swore profusely, rolled out of bed, got dressed, and literally ran out the door. I missed the bus by about 18 seconds – I saw it roll by. It was one minute early.

I hoofed it downtown. Got a latte at Starbucks. Walked to work. Was supposed to go sit in the conference room for sales training, but since someone’s out sick there was no one on tech support. I took calls instead.

I slept for 11 hours because apparently I’m on the rag. [I know I said I was done posting on this topic, but I lied.] I was cranky as hell on Monday, and last night I had mild cramps. Today I still have cramps and I’m bloated, starving, tired, and bleeding a little bit. My mind has been packed in cotton at the bottom of a dark, soft box. I’m pretty sure any commercial with a puppy in it would make me cry.

In short I have all the shitty PMS symptoms I had before, but without the Niagara Falls part. So it still sucks, but it sucks significantly less than it did. I was hoping for no bleeding at all after my ablation, but it looks like I’m not that lucky. (I’ll probably be one of those who grows back her endometrium in an astonishingly short amount of time – I don’t even have scars on my knees from childhood, because I’m so good at healing. Then I’ll have to decide if I want to have another ablation or just get the damn thing removed.) Stupid self-healing uterus.

Anyway, so I had nothing to read during my lunch break today. I felt weird sitting there, eating my pizza and salad alone with nothing to read and my hormones all whack. I kept finding myself staring at the staff, but when they caught me doing it I’d look back at my food like a lurking weirdo. I was humming the Christmas carols, too.

I’m such a dork. Guess I’ll be shopping at Fictionwise tonight, loading up my PPC with new reading material. Having nothing to read makes me too aware of my social deficiencies, and I can get lots of books on my PPC.

As for the “training,” management here is making the entire staff go through a CD-based sales training seminar. We all have 3-ring binders. There’s a portable DVD player and a big, thick workbook. We each have two hours on the clock every week to do the lessons.

I hate it.

Not because there’s anything wrong with it per se, but because it’s too much like being in AA and on a residence course at the same damn time – too healthy and upbeat and only half-true.

[Disclaimer: If you happen to work with me please take the following with a large grain of salt, and be aware that I – and a great many of my readers – were members of a large, cultish group for many years and have taken more self-help training than you could ever shake a stick at. Below is my opinion, and doesn’t mean I’m denigrating anything you find valuable in the training. Some of it’s good stuff. I’m just jaded.]

I hate the course because even though I’m getting paid to watch it, it’s awful. It was shot like an infomercial, and the guy – who is both fat and irritatingly upbeat – has a fuckin’ lisp. He’s personable and charming, and I just wanna hit him with the claw side of a hammer because he’s so excited about such stupid shit.

In the course of the cheesy videos, I’m encouraged to note that “only liars self-sedate,” and to develop a “personal power move.” I should notice how body language affects attitude and smile more and roll my shoulders back. I should notice that “readers are leaders.” [If that were the case, I’d be LOADED.]

I should cultivate an “attitude of abundance.” I should keep tedious logs at work, because “documentation focuses attention.” [Since when?] I should “model the best,” which means I should copy the personal habits of people who have more money than I do. [Only certain ones, though. Not the ones who just stay home out in the middle of nowhere and who do not have “personal power moves” or greasy personalities.] I should take someone who is doing better than me (better at what was not covered) out to lunch and pick her brain.

I’m told that “money is flow,” and admonished that “unfulfilled commitments block the pipe.” I’m given cheesy, 15-year-old New Age-y visualizations to explain why I’m poor and others are rich. I’m encouraged to “think positive!”

The whole thing makes me want to stab myself in the throat, but since I’m a good ex-cult member I’m paying attention, taking copious notes, and doing the homework like I should. Apparently I’m unique here outside the bubble because I can both complain bitterly and accomplish what’s expected of me. I’d forgotten what it’s like to live outside Fairfield, I really truly had.

So, yeah. Mandatory sales training. Clearly I’ve angered some minor but influential god, and I should go burn a virgin or something. Anybody got any virgins they’re not using?
