Device Love

In which I shamelessly plug my auctions.

This week I’ve listed four items for sale on eBay:

I did this because I no longer need, want, or use any of these items. And why is that?

Because my iPod Touch replaces them all! (Thanks, work! Best Xmas present from an employer EVER!)

Let’s gaze a moment at it, shall we?

iThing

Aw. Innit cute? I love my iThing.

Twitter! Surfing! Ebooks! Games! Facebook! Music! Movies! And it even has an eBay app, so I can conveniently track my auctions while I’m at the bar!

This may be the most perfect device EVAR. (Except for the part where I still have to carry a cell phone. And it’s only 8GB instead of 120GB, so I still need my other iPod for my music collection. And no free Office doc reader. But whatever.) SO deeply in lurve.

Syncing content to the iPod Touch

In which we consider our data-syncing options.

Once upon a time, an iPod could be used as an external USB hard drive; all you had to do was tick a check box in iTunes and from then on you could plug your trusty iPod into any computer and use it as a thumb drive. Great for hauling files and applications around in your pocket.

Now the iPod’s file system type has changed so the iPod no longer mounts as a disk drive. The pod itself has gone from being primarily an MP3 player to being a full-fledged PDA: we find that now that disk drive utility is truly needed, it’s gone.

Enter a host of syncing applications and solutions. The pod itself has great built-in Mail, Calendar, and Contacts applications, but they won’t natively sync to web-based content. There’s no built-in file utility, either, so you can’t put your Office documents on it. You can sync some functions through iTunes to local installations of Outlook, but who uses a single installation of Outlook any more?

The problem on the table is this: how do I sync my content to my iPod Touch?

Let me count the ways:

1. I can’t. I use the Google application (essentially just a bunch of shortcuts to mobile Google content on the web) to view web-based documents, contacts, and calendar items.

This solution is clean, but it sucks for two reasons: you can’t view your Calendar if you’re not at a hotspot, and you don’t get to utilize the iPod Touch’s built-in applications, which are adorably cute.

2. I sync my iPod to iTunes, iTunes to Outlook, and Outlook to Gmail using Plaxo.

Gack. This is the mess I’ll probably settle on, because I already use iTunes and I already have a Plaxo account, but can you say clusterfuck? Any chain with that many links in it is bound to fail miserably at some point.

3. Use Apple’s MobileMe.

MobileMe is a service that allows you to keep your files on a web server, and then access them from any web-connected browser and your iThing.

It has a cute little web interface where you can upload files and images, music and movies. It has a cute little iPod app that lets you view that same content – cached, even, so you can view previously-viewed content – offline. It opens Office docs, PDFs, and other file types. It syncs your Contacts and even your email (although why you’d want that, I have no idea

…aaaaaaand it costs $99 a year. For very little storage space. And it doesn’t do anything that Google and Plaxo don’t do for free.

What I really want is some genius to write a Google sync application that allows two-way synching between my iPod Touch apps and my remote Google services. (I suppose I’d want the same thing for Plaxo, AOL, Yahoo!, etc if I were nicer, but I’m not. I use Gmail.) You can sync (one-way only) your Google calendar through iTunes, but what good is a one-way calendar sync?

Argh. It’s so hard to be in love with a product that won’t do what you need. Except that it’s THE CUTEST DEVICE EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD OMGWTFBBQ!!!1!

Recent Developments

In which there’s a list. A list of stuff. Kinda random stuff, really, now that I think about it.

Friday. 1. In the morning, I got a ride to work from teh BF. He gave me a homemade breakfast sandwich. You gotta admit that that’s some seriously cute shit, when your BF makes you breakfast and hands it to you when he comes and PICKS YOU UP TO DRIVE YOU TO WORK. 2. Played around with the Gmail upgrade and determined that It Was Good. 3. Received an unexpectedly wonderful iThing from the employer and geeked out on it all day long. 4. Watched three episodes of Doctor Who season three in teh BF’s basement while gorging on awesome tostadas.

Saturday. 1. Scrubbed the holy hell out of the bathroom. Even washed the shower curtain! 2. Made soup and salad and bread for lunch and fed teh BF and G’ma and my bro. 3. Went out for sushi with teh BF and our friends; spent way way WAY too much money. 4. Mixed vodka, sake, and beer in the same night and got unexpectedly shitfaced and so went to bed early.

Sunday. 1. Woke up hung over and ravished my BF. 2. Bought Xmas cards – literally the only thing of note I accomplished. 3. Watched three more episodes of Doctor Who. 4. Ate tater tot nachos for dinner. Srsly. Nachos, but with tater tots.

Monday. 1. Grabbed the iThing even before getting out of bed and read some of the New York Times mobile edition. 2. At work, I updated my address book in between calls because I can NOT seem to keep my electronic shit in order; I did this exact same data entry last year and then managed to delete it. 3. I installed some code that he gave me over a year ago. 4. Got picked up for lunch by teh BF, who fed me salad with bleu cheese dressing and garlic bread at his place. 5. Found that being outside in this icky 36-degree weather without a coat is a significantly cooler experience than I like to have.

In other news, I have to work this Sunday. I don’t think I’ve ever worked a Sunday since I’ve been employed here… of course, they gave me the iThing so I guess it’s okay if I have to work a Sunday once in awhile.

Surprize again!

In which I never got anything this cool from an employer before.

Today during our weekly company meeting, admin announced that we wouldn’t really be having a proper Christmas party this year – only a luncheon – but then they got all giggly and ran into the back and then came out and proceeded to pass out “early Christmas presents.”

We all sat in the meeting an ripped into our little brightly-wrapped boxes.

They contained custom-engraved 8Gb iPod Touches. For EVERYONE.

And then they turned on the wireless, so we could all spend the afternoon installing cute applications on our new toys. It was so hella fun!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Apple has got the cute form factor market cornered. OMG. From the Newton to the iPod to the Wii to the iPod Touch – they’re geniuses.

Meaningless Drivel

In which there are a few things, and not a one of them is interesting.

I had my first review last Friday: apparently I’m doing a kick-ass job. I asked for an ergo keyboard and got one the same day. Yay!

Winter’s here this week. It’s about sixteen degrees below freezing. Today I’m wearing fleece-lined jeans, boots, and a fleece vest under my wool sweater. I’m so bulky I look like the Michelin tire baby, but at least I’m warm.

I thwacked my ankle on the wooden asana in front of my laptop at home, and now my whole ankle’s swollen and it hurts.

It took over fifteen hours to sync my iPod with my newly reassembled iTunes library. I have less than 3Gb of space remaining on the iPod, so next weekend I’m gonna prune the crap out of my music library. Yesterday I splurged and bought a new hard drive for my laptop, because the laptop’s drive is the same size as the iPod (30Gb) and that’s just stupid. Plus it was way cheap on eBay.

I made payments to the surgeon and the dentist yesterday, and now I have barely enough lunch money to get me through until next payday. To stave off the feeling of poverty, I finally spent the $100 Amazon.com gift certificate I got from my uncle, Dangerous, so next week I’ll have a nice box of books to cheer my broke ass up.

My life is boring. All I do is work and sleep and play with electronic gadgets. Thank God I have such lovely electronic devices or I’d be lost, I tell you, utterly lost.

Organizing Data

In which I spend most of the day in front of the computer.

Today I woke up hungry at the ass-crack of dawn, but I stayed in bed until nine or so rockin’ out to tuneage on the beloved iPod. I made eggs and toast and coffee for breakfast when I finally got up. Then I plugged in my external hard drive enclosure, and began the process of putting my iTunes library back together.

I’ve been using SharePod to add content to my iPod since I left Iowa last September, so what’s on my iPod no longer matches the backup I have.

I couldn’t find my old library .xml file, so I had to import all the tracks into iTunes and right now it’s updating album art. When it’s done, I’ll import all the tracks I’ve got on the laptop, then the six gigs of music from Jayrob, and then the video content I have.

Then I’ll spend all evening massaging files, editing tags and shit, and finally I’ll export my playlists off the iPod itself and into iTunes. Once all of THAT is done, I’ll be able to sync my iPod for the first time in over four months… a process that will probably take half the damn night since iTunes will decide the relationship is new and re-write the entire drive.

Long story short? If you’ve got an MP3 library bigger than a few gigs, back it up. Now. Any way you can. Srsly. This is a pain in the arse.

In other news, I’ve decided to attend the first-annual Global Blogger Meetup in DC in March. So far, only three bloggers are actually slated to attend, but that’s all good because it means I get to call dibs on Vuboq’s couch without anyone arguing with me. (I’d prefer the guest room, of course, but Only Me’s already got it, the quasi-Aussie git.)

Vuboq says there will be a chili night on Sunday – I offered to make veggie chili if needed! – and maybe Monday Afternoon Margaritas the next day since I’m dying for the spinach enchiladas and liquid cheese he’s always blogging about. Then on St. Pat’s Day we’ll all go get trashed in honor of Vuboq’s birthday.

Airline tickets are $359 right now, so with vigilant surfing I should be able to find something under $300 and be able to take a reasonable amount of cash along. It’s a lot of damn flying for a 3-day vacation, but what the hell. I do, after all, have both an eBook reader and a kitting bag to stave off boredom, and I’ve already decided 2008 should be a Year Of Travel for me. DC in March, Seattle in June, and NY in September!

Now all I have to do is convince my employer to give me all that time off.

iPod Trouble

In which my heart is breaking.

Sad MacYesterday I was groovin’ to my iPod and though I saw that the battery was in the red, I just let it play until the battery died.

Then I plugged it into my laptop with its USB cable…

Now it won’t boot up. I let it charge for three hours, took it off the cable, and tried to restart it. The hard drive clicks, but it only gets as far as the Apple screen and no farther. After awhile the backlight goes off. When I reconnect it to the USB cable, it gives me the “battery very low” message for awhile, then tries to boot and hangs.

I let it charge all night. When I tried to wake it up this morning, no joy.

I’ve brought it to work with me and have it plugged in to my work tower’s USB port. It seems to have finally charged enough to boot all the way up. God, I hope it’s okay because I really don’t have a very good backup of my music library. I mean, I have all the files, but they’re spread out all over the goddamned place and it would not be easy to reformat a new MP3 player.

Update: Charging the thing on my work tower worked! MY IPOD BOOTS UP AGAIN! I AM SO RELIEVED! I probably should have rebooted the laptop before panicking.
