On the housing front: a reprieve

In which there’s some good news… for once.

We don’t have to move! AmmZon’s mother has offered to sell her the house, and at a remarkably reasonable price. AmmZon is considering it, and in the meanwhile: we’re not evicted! Yay! I can stay here until I get a job and an apartment!

My previous employer — the one that laid me off last June — is hiring again. I sent in my resume today. Maybe they’ll hire me back. (I think I’ll go in tomorrow and sit on the HR person’s desk… for like an hour. Or three. Maybe she’ll hire me just to get me to leave her the hell alone.)

GauntletOn the knitting front, I finished my first gray gauntlet and have started the second one. The fabric is much firmer made of the superwash wool sock yarn I used, and I really like the way this one fits and feels. The one I made out of the bamboo yarn has in barely twenty minutes of wear lost its shape and is beginning to pill up, so clearly that particular yarn is too delicate for a hard-wearing application like gloves. (I’ll probably make the second bamboo one anyway, and give them away, and use the remaining bamboo yarn for something low-impact, like a scarf.)

In other news, I’m downloading Bee Gees dance remixes from Limewire, because, um — well, for no good reason at all, really — and one thing that drives me utterly, incoherently apeshit is mislabeled tracks! Who are these fucking idiots who can’t tell the Bee Gees from Chicago? Or Rick James from Hot Chocolate? Or Hall & Oates from Player? Or Barry White from Marvin Gaye?! WHAT THE FLYING FUCK, people!

Things I've Done Today

In which I present you with a list of my recent accomplishments! Yay!

Gauntlet #11. I finished knitting the first gauntlet.

2. I applied for a job at Cambridge.

3. I wrote a letter to Brumbaugh & Quandahl, PC, LLO, Rat Bastards about the levy on my checking account, inviting them to either provide evidence that they were legally able to attach my account or to kindly get their fucking garnishment off my account and refund my NSF fees toute suite else be hearing from my lawyer.

4. I made coffee and drank it with Silk brand French Vanilla Creamer in it.

5. I read several chapters of Hyperion, and OMG it’s sooooooo good.

6. I added additional items to my Wishlist because God knows I don’t want to be at a loss when I get a job and need to start spending money again.

[Possible 7.] I’m thinking of going to the store to buy ingredients for chole (aka chana masala) (aka kabuli chana) (aka chickpea curry) because the recipe over at Dykewife’s looks freakin’ delicious.

In other news, the weather ’round here is expected to turn reeeeeeally shitty tomorrow.

CholeUpdate: I made the chole after all, and served it with rice, papadums, cottage cheese, and green chili chutney.

Instead of following a specific recipe I combined both of the linked recipes above, adding some of the pre-mixed chana masala powder I found, in the surprisingly awesome International section at Easter’s, for less than two dollars.

It was so good! I had seconds. Truck had seconds too. When AmmZon gets home, I bet she’ll also have seconds. That’s how good it is.

I just don't get this shit.

In which I discuss the fascinating and perplexing details of poverty.

I had had a credit card through Capital One for many years. (Yes, yes, I know that’s a bad idea because their interest rates are astronomical, but whatever.) When my household’s income dropped drastically for over a year, I was forced to make executive decisions about bill paying. I basically quit paying the bill for this card.

The account went into in-house collections. I make token payments of $5 or $25 at random intervals, to show willingness to pay. Eventually the account went to an outside agency which was aggressive as hell and harassed me constantly. I had to tell the chick handling my account never to call me again because she was such a horrifyingly stone-cold cunt.

Via fax (because the agency wouldn’t use email and I couldn’t speak to my agent over the phone without wanting to kill myself), I made payment arrangements. I didn’t keep to them — because of the whole let’s-go-to-Indy-and-make-money fiasco — so the collections firm levied my checking account to the tune of almost three thousand dollars.

Today I logged into my online banking portal for the first time in months. Mysteriously, my account balance is -485.69.

*blink*

Now, WTF? Where did the garnishment go? I looked through all my statements since last July: no levy. It’s gone, like it never happened… except all of my NSF fees due to the garnishment are still there.

Oh, but wait. On January 3rd of this year, there are two transactions: a $50 “GARNISHMENT FEE” and then another charge, “PAYMENT OF GARNISHMENT SCSC016413,” for $238.47. How did the garnishment amount drop from three grand to $238.47? Why is there no record of the account-killing garnishment in the first place? I mean, I owe my bank hundreds and hundreds of dollars in NSFs because of the fucker, and now it’s gone? And what the fuck is this $238.47 number?

They garnished me, fucked up my account, then ungarnished me. And now they’re garnishing me again. People, if you haven’t lived without a checking account since you were fifteen, let me tell you: it’s nearly impossible to live without one. You can’t cash checks. You can’t use a debit card. You can’t do shit. Garnishing someone’s checking account is the very best way to marginalize them entirely. Without a checking account, one can barely function in the world at all.

$238.47 and a $50 fee?!?!! Clearly I need to send some faxes.

Update: My friend informs me a garnishment without authorization is illegal. I’m gonna send a bitchy fax, demanding the garnishment be removed and all my fees paid. Oh yeah.

Arbitrary Mile Posts

In which the mere change of the year does nothing for me. And it is, of course, all about ME.

At the awesome combination wedding reception/New Year’s Eve party I attended, someone wished me “a great 2007.” I replied that I was looking forward to 2007 because it certainly couldn’t be any worse to me than 2006 was.

Open mouth, insert foot.

Today is January 4th. This year so far, I have already had the stomach flu and learned that AmmZon’s landlord — who is also her mother — has evicted us, and that we have to be out of this, our cozy little house on 2nd Street, by February 1st.

Four days, people!

I have no idea how much money I have left, because I spent a more than I intended to over the holiday, and because what remains is all in AmmZon’s checking account. [I, you may recall, no longer have an account of my own because it was garnished, a result of the financial difficulty of the last year or so of my marriage.] I had thought that I had four or five weeks of money left, with which to buckle down and find that job I don’t really want…

— But turns out that, after you spend a few months NOT spending a third of your life dragging your ass to some bullshit job where you perform tasks that really have no meaning, you develop a soul-deep revulsion toward the whole idea. Getting a 40-hour-a-week job of any stripe just grates: getting up, dragging one’s ass through the morning routine, into the car, across town, into a building. To a desk. Push pixels. Rinse and repeat.

— Work as we know it is a bad fucking idea, it really is. We spend a lot of time convincing ourselves that we like it, that it’s fulfilling, that we enjoy it, blah blah blah, but the truth is that it sucks and everyone’s happier when they don’t have to do it.

— Actually, I did think of something I want to do, just this morning, while I was reading the back of a bag of pita chips. But I can’t do it because I don’t have any money. (Or experience in the industry.) See, there used to be a restaurant in town called Hykie’s Falafel. (I love falafel.) Later it was sold and became Baba’s Falafel. The last guy to own it — Richard, I think his name was (and damn was he CUTE) — would roll back in to town, open Baba’s and run it for a year or so, then close it suddenly and leave town again. (Cute FLAKE.) He hasn’t been back for awhile, but I bet all the stuff is in storage around here someplace.

— But see, that’s the kind of job I want these days. Roll in around nine or ten, serve lunch, spend the afternoon cooking and running the business. Serve dinner, close up at nine, go home. Hire some cute kids to help me. Find a morning-oriented kid, some Future Manger of America, to open up for me so I don’t really have to show up until lunch rush starts. I could take afternoon naps at whim. It would use all my skill sets — cooking, running a business, hiring, firing, being nice to customers — and plus, I love falafel.

— But I don’t know how to get a food service license, I don’t have the recipes, I don’t have any Middle Eastern food service contacts, and above all I don’t have the money to rent and renovate a store front. And since most of the marriage’s bills were in my name and haven’t been paid since June, well, it’s not like I’ll be getting any loans in the next four years. Oh well. Nix the restauranteur idea. Even though I do have all the skills and I really love falafel.

…Now. What the hell was I saying?

Oh, yeah: I thought I had more than a month left to get a job, and that everything was pretty mellow, that this shiny new ’07 was gonna be my year… how could it not be, after last year? But now I have to get a job immediately and a place to live, and I was just puking the day before yesterday so it all seems rather abrupt and cruel.

Change is good, right?

Right?

Weather, working, and hippies

In which I couldn’t go anywhere even if I wanted to.

Freezing rain last night. It is, as they say, colder’n a witch’s tit outside. I can’t even open the jeep’s doors because they’re frozen shut.

I can’t finish the BME site until — gag! — I get a copy of MS FrontPage installed. Fucking ASP anyway.

Bread’s refinancing the farm so those litigious hippies will go away. I really don’t talk shit to people, but I’m afraid that if I found myself face-to-face with them I’d go right the hell off.

We were paying, damn it, and they decided to sue us because they wanted out of a contract they’d agreed to carry! They nickle-and-dimed us the whole way, from the $6k they added at closing for no reason to the money they demanded for the propane left in the tank the day we took possession. They’re creeps, basically, so screw ’em.

I have practice tonight for the 2006 holiday benefit, so I think I might bathe today.

In other news, I hear it’s NLW’s birthday!

I Still Ain't Got No Job

In which I didn’t go to jail.

I have made $0.07 from my Google AdSense ads so far. (That’s about $25 a year. Whee.) Go, me.

It’s getting c-c-cc-cold here. I am not diggin’ it. I much preferred yesterday’s chinook, in which I wore a long-sleeved cotton t-shirt and was comfortable, but right now there’s a winter storm watch for the area and I bet everything freezes solid tonight.

On the work front, I applied for the webmaster position at Overland last week. BvB, the other singer in my band (The Band That Never Gigs), works there, and tells me that she’s pushing to get me an interview. HELLO EMPLOYEE DISCOUNT!

I’ve also applied here, but they haven’t even acknowledged receipt of my resume, so no high hopes there.

Oh, in late breaking news, cops now love me. This totally freaks me out. For instance: the night before last, I drove a drunk friend home. This was after after-hours, so it was probably around three or four o’clock in the morning. I was sober, but I had a… questionable… item or two in my bag and my friend was most likely carrying; who knows. I have a brake light out, plus cops scare the shit out of me in general; when they turn their lights on I basically have a heart attack each and every time. I knew I was going to get pulled over, and depending on the behavior of my drunk friend I was possibly going to get Fucked With. My heart started going about 210 bpm and I was already dreading my name in the next day’s police report.

Anyway, this cop followed me for three blocks… and then turned off without pulling me over. I could not fucking believe it. And then, last night? A cop followed me down an alley as I was walking to my car, then waved when I turned to look at him, and then waited for me to get into my car — like, to make sure I was safe or something? — and then he drove away. It’s weird, OH YEAH it is, but I’m grateful. They can love me all they want, fer sure. Better that than pull my ass over!

I distinctly remember telling someone yesterday, “That was funny! That’s totally going on the blog!” but now I can’t remember what the situation was. Perhaps sleeping twelve hours a night affects one’s short term-to-long term memory transference?

I’m still into knitting, like, a lot; and also: my Wee Mee:

I gave her a bulkier sweater, boots instead of Birks, and a seasonally appropriate coffee cup. SO FREAKIN’ CUTE!!!

In other news, my band, The Band That Never Gigs, is doing a gig in December! A benefit for a guy with brain cancer, but a gig nonetheless. And tomorrow night I start rehearsal for JAM’s annual holiday benefit concert because, you know, hey, it’s for a good cause, even if he *does* try to make me sing Bette Midler’s From A Distance.

In other other news, I love Gmail on my cell phone. It rocks.

Loved all your jokes in the last entry’s comments. Thank you! *smooch*

Christ on a Crutch

In which what the flying fuck!??!?!

Bread dropped by today. We were served papers today; the sheriff was out at the farm this morning. Turns out the folks from whom we’re buying the farm property — on contract — are attempting to sue us for breach of contract, to the tune of about $40k.

My assumption is — because they’d asked last spring if we were looking for refinancing, and said they wanted the rest of their money — that they want out from under the contract, but can’t find anyone to buy the paper. I mean, there must be some motivation for this shit… this is the second time this year they’ve served papers on us, and we’re not doing anything but paying the mortgage every month.

Bread’s mom works for a lawyer, so his copy of the paperwork is with her boss already. We’ll see what happens. I just think it’s weird to get all litigious over some remodelling and a new roof, when your purchasers are pretty much great folk who pay their taxes and insurance and balloon payments on time. There are new doors — doors that actually close, and have locks and weather stripping and all the fun stuff the original doors lacked — and there are over half a dozen brand new windows, and about eight thousand dollars worth of columns on the new porch, which is cedar-decked…

I don’t know enough to know if we really are in breach for having done work on the house. If we are, I’m totally fucking pissed at our lawyer — who should have maybe mentioned this no-remodel stipulation to us, because clearly we missed it when we read the purchase contract ourselves.

I mean, what’s the point of buying a shitty old house, if you can’t unfuck the damn thing before your mortgage is over? We told the sellers during the purchase negotiations that we were going to start remodelling the very minute we moved in. Gah! I just don’t understand any of this, I really don’t. These people are weird. They left their dog there the first six months we lived there and never even offered to pay for dog food or anything, and then started going out there and taking stuff from the outbuildings until I finally wrote them a nasty letter, and now they’ve served papers on their buyers twice in six months. WTF?

The Porch

In other news, Happy Hallowe’en, y’all!

Good news. And bad news.

In which I feel rather taciturn about good news, given the run of things lately.

The bad news is that [a] I’m not eligible for unemployment benefits until the last day of the month and [b] my benefits, when they start coming in mid-August, will be a whopping $164 per week. I suppose I can go on food stamps for a couple of weeks if I have to.

The good news is that I might — might — get hired to do software training for WGC, which is a gig that pays remarkably well. (Like, ‘that’s kinda weird’ well. Like, ‘what’s wrong with the gig that you have to pay that much?’ well.) I interviewed with SF yesterday, and this morning he talked to my guys in Indy. Bread called me to tell me the good news while BoSe was on the other line with SF, and then I called SF back right away but he hasn’t returned my calls.

From what Bread told me, I may end up going out on some day claims next week, then go through two weeks of adjuster training to get certified, and then find myself in front of a class of baby adjusters teaching them Xactimate. Apparently they have a hard time keeping instructors because they’re always running off to do CAT adjusting somewhere, and because most people don’t like standing in front of people. As a geek and a performer, teaching software sounds fantastic to me, but what do I know.

More bad news is that my period is coming, so I’ll probably end up flat on my ass in hideous pain for two or three days in the very near future. Hopefully the timing won’t fuck me for this possible teaching gig. Of course, Bread now has the laptop, so that might fuck me on this gig too.

And, if all that didn’t suck enough, I balanced my checkbook and even though I’ve been really careful about Not Spending Money — please note that I have no onions, or laundry detergent, or even coffee — I no longer have enough in the account to cover the mortgage when it comes due on the first. I guess I didn’t really think I’d be able to, not really, not with gas at three bucks a gallon and having to eat and all, but still. I’d kinda hoped.

So, to recap: I’m flat broke. Bread won’t get paid for another two weeks. I have no money coming in. From my two interviews this week, I got a “we’re not hiring,” and a guy who told someone other than myself that he might be able to hire me but I’d have to do some non-paying shit for an unspecified amount of time first before I’ll ever see a check. Also: I live alone way out in the country and am spending far too much time by myself, and my period is coming. And I feel sorry for myself. And the satellite is off, and I don’t even have any movies to watch. Yeah, I think that about covers the situation. Suffice it to say that I’ve felt sunnier.

On the flip side, though, and I’m nothing if not a blessings-counter, I do have most of a bottle of cheap vodka and some lemons, the animals have enough food for a few more days, and I’m back on the Internet. (I forked over the money to get the land line reactivated, because a girl can’t job hunt without being able to get online to check the Iowa job db and to email resumes.) So at least I can see all your awesome, wonderful comments here on the ‘box, and that makes me feel really good. I love you guys, I really do. I’ll try to get caught up on your comments and your blogs this weekend.

But first? I have to go scrounge something to eat out of my pantry. Something that doesn’t require onions. Gah. Vegetarian cooking, without onions? Can’t even make soup without onions! I’ll probably end up eating a box of macaroni and cheese. Crap.

Update: I had one of my favorite weird meals: hash browns and gravy. (And a side salad, featuring cukes AmmZon grew her very own self.) I make amazing vegetarian gravy, I really do. I’d never server hash browns and gravy as a meal to anyone else, it’s just too weird. No ‘main dish’. But hell, I’m alone, who’s to see what weird shit I eat? And now I’m having a lemondrop. Yum. Happy tummy. And I found my copy of Contact; if I can get the VCR working I’m gonna watch a movie!

T minus two days and counting

In which I’m overheated, excited, a little stressed, and realizing how deep my poverty-consciousness goes.

It’s unutterably hot and humid outside. I just had to walk to the bank and back because Bread’s got the big black truck. I’m all sticky. There’s a severe weather alert out for thunderstorms, and at lunchtime it turned dark and rumbly in a hurry but only rained big fat drops for a few minutes and it’s like a really damp oven out there.

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 530 PM CDT FOR JEFFERSON COUNTY.

AT 443 PM CDT…A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WAS REPORTED CAPABLE OF PRODUCING GOLF BALL SIZE HAIL…AND DAMAGING WINDS IN EXCESS OF 60 MPH. THIS STORM WAS LOCATED NEAR PERLEE…OR ABOUT NEAR NORTHERN FAIRFIELD…MOVING SOUTHEAST AT 15 MPH.

Severe Weather Alert

THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WILL BE NEAR… BECKWITH AND SALINA BY 455 PM CDT… FOUR CORNERS BY 510 PM CDT…

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 900 PM CDT TUESDAY EVENING FOR SOUTHEASTERN IOWA AND NORTHWESTERN ILLINOIS AND NORTHEAST MISSOURI.

Golf ball-sized hail, people!

I’m existing in a funny combination of excited and freaked out. On the one hand, it’s a job. I’ve been working since I was 16 and a job’s a job. I’m blasé. On the other hand, I have really only the vaguest idea of what I’m getting into, so I barely even have enough information to properly wig out on.

The sudden exit is going remarkably smooth so far; the money’s been there, I got an LOA rather than having to quit with two days notice after working here for six years, our electronics shipped out on time and will be here in the morning, etc.

But. Then there’s the house, the cat, the dogs… the four people we’ve asked so far can’t take any of those duties for us. I think Nanner will be able to drop by the place every week or so to take the mail in and pet the cat and put food out for him, and Bread’s asking another friend of his to just drive through occasionally to make sure the doors are all closed and such. But this is shit we’ve got to get resolved in the next two days and it’s kinda major.

I’m having some fun observing my own thought patterns about money. This gig is supposed to be quite lucrative, and I have a mental monster who keeps trying to pop up and say bullshit! there’s no way you can make that much that fast! even though I know that people do. Hell, I have friends that do. I seem to have some deep-seated lower-middle-class abundance issues and it’s been interesting to root them out for a look at them. I seem to have a belief that I’m only supposed to have enough, no extra. I’ve noted in myself a feeling of mild relief when I’m back to a check-to-check existence after a spell of abundance simply because it’s familiar.

In other news, a funny ISP tech support story almost worthy of Userfriendly: One of our support techs just wasted three entire calls trying to fix a customer’s DSL. He did all the troubleshooting, even swapped out her DSL modem for her. Finally he called her back to quadruple-check her settings only to hear her say, “Oh, I switched my DSL to another provider. Could that have anything to do with it?”

True story.

Saturdays Are For Recovering

In which I learn a valuable lesson about stress and partnership, and a Friday that goes all the way into Saturday morning!

After work last night, I went and had that nice cold cocktail. Yum. Then I jumped into the BBT and drove myself home, windows down, NPR on the radio. Friday! The weekend! Yes!

I decided to go through the mail immediately when I walked in the door. I’d been intending to do it for two weeks, and there was a massive pile of it on the laundry table that I’d been studiously ignoring. I figured if I left it, it would continue to not get done.

Bread came in and we had our usual ‘how was your day?’ conversation. He helped me sort the actual mail from the garbage. [We get mail by the metric ton these days, I swear to God. I even opted out a few years ago, but someone seems to have bought us subscriptions to Consumer Reports and Atlantic Monthly magazines and now we’re back on all the lists. It’s a nasty waste, all that paper.] When I found the bills, I opened them up and added the couple I’d missed to my spreadsheet and showed it to Bread.

“So what’s this?” he asked, reading.

“The bills. The money we need.”

“Hrm. Well, here’s a start,” he said, and handed me a hundred dollar bill. “The mortgage is paid?”

“Yup. This list is just bills, though, no food or gas or smokes or anything!”

“Uh, yeah, I see that.” He grinned at me. “Quit stressing! It’s not even as bad as I’d thought. I’ll handle it. Now, wanna go have a cocktail at the Hideaway?”

And that was it. Gorgeous was right. She’d told me the day before to share the burden with my partner, that that’s what they’re for. So I did, and he said he’d handle it, and he will because that’s what he does. And now I’m not freaked about it any more.

The man actually laughed at me. I’d gotten myself all worked up about it, had been mulling it over for days and days… you see, I do all the bookkeeping: I open the mail, I write all the checks, I pay all the bills. Naturally I have something of a running total in my head, and so I start stressing much earlier than necessary… I think the man actually found it amusing that I’d gotten into a funk about money.

Bastard. (This is the man who has said to me on more than one occasion, “If you’re worried about money, you’ve got nothing to worry about. You can always get more money.”)

Then we went right back to town. We parked at BoSe’s house, walked through the incredibly packed ‘downtown’ area of Fairfield. (It was Art Walk with some kind of Italian Days theme. The square was SRO and there was no parking anywhere.) We had drinks at the Hideaway and started passing out invitations to the barn party. Bread spoke with BoSe a couple of times. Eventually we were tipsy and hungry so we went in search of food.

Every restaurant on the square was SRO. I decided I wanted Los Portales, so we walked over. They were closed. At 8:31 on a Friday night. I was starving and hot and pissed off and nagged Bread into walking two more blocks to University Amoco, which has a new Mexican restaurant called Guadelejara in it. ALSO CLOSED. By then I was hot, pissed off, and my feet hurt ’cause I wasn’t wearing walking shoes. I monstered on Bread a little. He asked me why the hell I was taking my shit out on him, and I said, “What the fuck! You do it to me all the time!” and started marching back up Second street.

We ended up at Torino’s. They’ve updated their menu, so I had ‘manicotti’ and a side salad. It wasn’t brilliant, but it wasn’t pizza either. After that, I felt so much better.

We went next door to the Dead Cock and stayed there partying until one in the morning. Well, Bread left at one — we had a fight in the parking lot first, of course — I stayed and closed the bar. Ray had a little after-hours at her house; we left the bar right after last call and did a whirlwind tidying-up at her place. (It wasn’t dirty. She’d said it was a sty, but basically all we did was tidy things up, take out the trash, and light incense!) It was a fairly small after-hours; bigger than she’d wanted or expected, but not huge. I tried to crash a couple of times but both times she came and found me and asked me what I was doing!

Around four, she told the few remaining stragglers that she was going to bed and threw them out. Then she and I settled for some girl talk, but I basically fell asleep on one of her kids’ bunkbeds. I can’t do that all night shit very well any more.

She woke me up at eight. (Groan.) I sat in her kitchen trying to wake up while she chatted cheerfully about her kids and family and sucked down three cups of black coffee in less that eight minutes. (Ray is so fucking cool.) Then we hopped in her new car — she traded in that monstrous grocery getter for a late 90’s Saab — made a deposit at my bank and headed out of town.

She dropped me off at home before nine, then headed for Ottumwa to pick her man up. I fed the dogs, grabbed the Frapuccinos I’d bought and a glass of ice and headed for the bedroom. My man was sleeping, so I stripped and got in with him. He woke up, we, ah, ‘greeted’ each other, nudge nudge wink wink, then he got up and I went to sleep.

I got up at two, put on a bikini, made tostadas, lounged on the porch in the sun. Ray threatened to swing back by on her way back from Ottumwa tonight. Other than that, no plans. Maybe clean the barn. Go swimming. Eh. It’s Saturday, I don’t have to do shit if I don’t want to! Yay!
