All About My Day

In which I still hate sales.

Since I can’t really unload verbally in the presence of the folks who are actually here, I’m gonna do it in front of the whole damned Internet! Because that’s what goblinbox.com is all about. Me, venting. And you, reading all about it. Because you’re the most superior creatures on the whole network.

Anyway. We stayed up until three local time, and got up at eight. Ouch. By nine we were clean and dressed and in our first meeting, which morphed magically into our second meeting over breakfast at Bob Evans across the parking lot (where there were zero vegetarian options on the menu), and then if you’ll believe me it turned into a third meeting at the team leader’s room. In a row.

Then we went and bought phones. Good God, what a pain in the ass. At least I didn’t have to pay a fucking security deposit. But still, it’s easier to adopt a child than it is to get a phone. I have a stack of paperwork four inches thick from that adventure.

After phones were accomplished, we drove to the fourth meeting of the day at The Office, which basically is the room where the construction company has all their laptops and copiers. There, we learned that some guys are already selling, that the first roof goes on tomorrow, and that the POS materials are not finished, and there is no official pitch yet scripted, and the software line items need to be adjusted because they’re wrong, and basically just go get ’em, tigers!

It was totally inspirational and utterly uninformative. Plus I was the only bona fide geek in the room so I didn’t understand a tenth of what they said to each other because, honestly, I don’t know soffet from fascia let alone ridge vent from architectural shingles.

When that meeting broke up, we tried to head back to the hotel but got lost for a long while. We finally made it, though, and I’m back on the ‘net where I belong. Yay!

Now! For the part you’ve all been waiting for! The venting!

So. You know how the world is cleverly designed so that different people enjoy and excel at different things, and we all tend to gravitate toward the things we’re good at and specialize in them? Well, I’d be the last person to call that a design flaw. I think it’s utterly brilliant that I can pay someone to wrench on my car rather than do it myself! But it means that members of groups other than my own tend to be incomprehensible and/or annoying to me.

So grok how scary this is: right now I’m totally surrounded by… SALES PEOPLE.

You know salespeople? The way there’s the top dog, the charismatic one, and the rest of them get all cult-of-personality about him? And how they love to talk and talk and talk all the time like a bunch of girls? And the way they’re obscenely gung-ho and cheerful about shit? And how when you ask them a direct question they tend to give you the longest answer possible, rather than just answering the fucking question already?

Well, I’ve been in meetings all day with people from that planet. Hell, not even people, but MEN from that planet. The only females I’ve dealt with were the waitresses at breakfast and the Cingular chick!

I have a fantastic overview of what we’re doing… I have about six fantastic overviews, actually… but virtually zero concrete details. And until we go ahead and manifest those details ourselves, I have the feeling they’re going to continue to not exist.

There’s work here, oh yeah, and money to be made, certainly. But I think someone who wanted to be led through some kind of training before jumping into the deep end would be sorely challenged here.

Luckily, I’m sharing a room with a contractor and a salesman. The two of them already know the vast majority of what they need to go sell roofs. They’re even — and this baffles me utterly — excited to start knocking on doors!

I am from a planet in a completely different galactic arm than theirs! But I’ll tell you this tidbit right now: no one is going to turn in more thorough, organized, and coherent bids than the ones that are gonna come off my laptop. No one.

Now I need to find some food. I haven’t eaten in eight hours, but BoSe and Bread are such hyper-excited girls that their tummies aren’t working properly and they’re making noises about waiting another hour or three before getting some dinner! Fuck that, say I! I’ll freakin’ walk to Taco Bell if I have to! Just watch me!

In other news, if you want my new cell number just call my old one — it’s on the voice mail message.

Update 10:49 pm: One word. Jacuzzi tub! (Unh-huh, babies. Hideous, wasteful use of resources. But mmm.)

Departure

In which we blow this popsicle stand.

We’re leaving this afternoon.

Gonna drive six hours, then check in at a Red Roof Inn. Tomorrow could consist of hanging out doing nothing, or it could be a crash course in Xactimate. Dunno yet. Depends on Dee’s (the team leader’s) schedule.

Yesterday we heard it was all off, that the company had pulled out of the contract. We had slight heart attacks. Then it turned out that wasn’t true. We were skeptical. Then SF came over for a social call, we told him what we’d heard, and he whipped out his cell phone. It was all a big mistake.

Ugh. Sounds organized, eh? *rolleyes* Fucking sales.

The important thing is that there’s a pool at the hotel. No one can talk to me if I’m under water, right?

In other news, I leave a window open in my office here at the farm so the cat, Buz McFuz, can come and go as he pleases. There’s no screen in it, obviously. I was sitting here writing notes for TrBu (the guy who will be house- and dog-sitting for us) and heard a loud, insistent buzzing. I asked Bindu if she was making that noise. She looked at me, which I interpreted as a, “Uh, no. I’m a dog. We don’t buzz.” So I got up, walked toward the sound. Looked up.

And there was a wasp! Building a nest on the damned ceiling! In my fucking house! I returned to my desk and watched it. It buzzed for awhile, doing its nest-building thing, then it flew out the window. A couple minutes later it was back. More nest building. Then it flew out the window again… and I promptly closed it.

I just saw it come back and run into the glass, touch it with its front legs a little, then fly off. If it’s smart enough to go around the house, come in through the open door, and find its nest again I really don’t know what I’ll do. Certainly wouldn’t want to kill someone that smart, even if she is just a bug. But I don’t really want her having babies in here either. There’s all kinds of other lovely places to build nests.

Update: She’s not back yet. Hopefully she’s chosen another location.

Update: She’s back! She found her way around and through the house! Shit! Now I gotta close everything up and it’ll get all hot.

Update the third: Turns out it wasn’t her. It was another bug. The nest is now abandoned. And I’m leaving for Indianapolis in an hour!

T Minus a Few Days and Counting

In which I go to school for software training. God, I love school.

Picture037.jpgToday we had a training meeting for Xactimate, this software we’re using. It was not daunting. It’s complex software, certainly, but not rocket science. What I really want is a finished output document so I know what the goal is.

We watched two short vids about adjusting roof damage; one went into great detail about how to to identify hail damage faked with a ball peen hammer. It was awesome — I’ve seen better acting in pornos — and had all the contractors in the room chuckling.

We got our ‘deployment’ schedule and we (and all our close friends on this gig) are going in the second group. Which is next week. We also got a list of all the tools and equipment we need, and the only thing we’re lacking at this point is an adapter to run the laptop and printer off of a car lighter. That’ll be an easy acquisition at a Best Buy along the way somewhere.

In celebration of our upcoming roadtrip, Bread’s truck started leaking oil rather rapidly and the front passenger wheel is squeaking. He is, as you can guess, extremely aggravated by this development and has been cursing under his breath for hours. My jeep, on the other hand, is still sitting in the driveway on a flat doughnut with a flat tire in the back.

Tonight, the JCGB is playing at the Dead Cock. I might go over and sit in and sing a few, and make an effort not to get shitty drunk.

Right now I’m sitting in BoSe’s living room, on his wireless connection with the laptop, digging some tunes in my iTunes library (which I moved it onto this machine the day it arrived, yo) with earphones, feelin’ groovy. Wireless. Love wireless. Yum.

In other news, the more I learn about this Indiana gig the more I think it’s gonna be perfect for Bread and hell on wheels for yours truly. Hanging out with dudes, doing office support for construction sales? In the cab of a black truck? In the dead of summer? With my husband, who can be a real bear to work for? Aaarrrggghhhh! *bangs head on desk*

Update: Turns out that I might be able to stay in the hotel room and be the computer/paperwork chick, while Bread and BoSe go out and pound the pavement. That? Would be SO SWEET. OMG, please God, please let it be that way. Please please please.

Update: Hotel reservations. Indianapolis cell phone. Pay our current bills at home, pay next month’s too. Worry about whatever work Bread’s truck is wanting. Hope this friend of ours will really agree to stay at our house and feed the animals. This project is exhausting.

Adding Social Bookmarking Links To WordPress

In which we add bookmark links to our pages.

Please, if you don’t use WordPress, excuse me while I geek out for just a moment. If you do use WP, use my code! 😉

To add del.icio.us, Digg, Furl, Technorati, Blinklist, and reddit bookmark links to your pages:

1. Copy this code and insert it into your pages. (I put mine into my single.php template.)

2. Download this file, unzip it, and FTP the resulting folder to your template folder (i.e., /wp-content/themes/your-current-theme/.)

Now you’re easily bookmarkable!

To this guy for making me want it in the first place.
And this guy for the del.icio.us image.

Late For Dinner

In which I’m incredibly rude.

Last night I stayed late after work, moving goblinbox.com to its new server. Bread called and wanted to meet for a drink and then dinner. I said I’d be right there… then I got distracted fucking around with this or that thing. I finally realized what time it was — forty-five minutes later — and ran out to the jeep, and Bread was there and boy was he PISSED ALL THE WAY OFF AT ME.

I so deserved it.

We drove to a restaurant for pizza in our seperate rigs. When we were seated, I apologized furiously for being so late. I’m a geek who needs to watch the time.

In other news, I’m totally moved to the new box but Keef wants me to wait ’til the new DNS server’s working. So the move may not be for another day. Or two. Or three. We’ll see.

Shopping for Mexican

In which we prepare for Friday’s par-tay.

Saturday Bread and I went to town and had McDonald’s for breakfast. I know, I know. Don’t say anything.

Then we went to the vet’s and bought Frontline for the animals. Then we bought kibbles for the animals. Hundred and ten bucks right there. (Next time, we’re getting gerbils. I swear to God, three dogs and a cat’s a habit more expensive than drugs.) Then home.

I had a lunch date with NLW at noon-thirty, but I was totally late and the poor woman was starving when I got there. She fed me spinach pesto and we drank the six dollar bottle of wine I’d brought. Somehow during the course of the afternoon I spent sixty bucks on yarn, needles, and a pattern — I’ll be knitting this in a week or so. My first sweater! Hopefully starting it in May will mean I’ll actually be wearing it by next winter. (I’m still knitting the Fuzzyfeet my mother requested last Thanksgiving.)

I stopped at the store for a few things afterward and was home a little after five. Bread talked me into going back to town for the third time that day, and we ate dinner at the Dead Cock. It was slow in there, mellow and quiet. We watched South Park and went home.

Today I slept ’til ten. (Yes!) When I got up, Bread was doing laundry. Then we went to Nanner’s house, and Bread cooked breakfast. I have no idea why he cooked breakfast; he just did. He made asparagus, tomato, and onion omelettes with hash browns. It was awesome.

Nanner gave me an office chair. When we got home, I cleaned my office and the bedroom and swept the parts of the second storey that aren’t actually under construction. Bread brought my new chair in. IT ROLLS. I love it. It’s a totally legit office chair! It has arm rests and it’s adjustable and everything. It’s possible that I’ve never been happier about a chair in my entire life.

Amazon Blonde and Truck came out; Truck stayed here and AB and I went to ScrOttumwa to do our Cinqo de Mayo shopping at the big goddamned community-killer they call Super Wal-Mart. It’s so fuckin’ cheap I feel dirty — and not in a good way — whenever I go there: we bought a cart full of stuff and it only cost $66. And $22 of that was for the half-gallon of namebrand rum we’d bought!

I know their prices will pop back up to average after they’ve killed all the older, smaller grocery stores in town, but for now? You just can’t get shit cheaper anywhere else. (Plus their Mexican — excuse me, Hispanic — food selection is much broader than any of Fairfield’s stores.)

After shopping, AB and I stopped at the Tom-Tom Tap for cocktails and a gossip. It was lovely. Love the Tom-Tom.

Later, at home, I folded Bread’s laundry (in order to empty the dryer so I could wash and dry my own clothes) and Bread did the dishes. If the fucker’s not careful, I’m going to start believing him soon when he says he’s actually learned to be a decent roommate.

In other news, I had goblinbox moved over to the new server, but then Keef had an interaction with the new server’s support/billing departments that was so scary and wrong it just boded badly for the whole enterprise and he dropped that whole thing like it was hot and got a server elsewhere. So I have to move the whole goddamned site again, but it’s nine o’clock on Sunday night and I ain’t drivin’ to town to do it now, and I sure as hell ain’t doing it over dial-up from home.

In short, there may be outages tomorrow in goblinboxland. But rest assured, my babies, that mamma’ll be workin’ on it.

New server, new checks

In which the move is postphoned just a little longer. And I buy silly checks.

Fantasia (1940)At the coffee shop this morning, the barrista was playing one of those pieces of music none of us can name but all know because it was in Fantasia and I found myself whistling along. The woman in line behind me said, “Your whistling sounds just like the Disney version!” (I can whistle, yo. I really can.)

Now I want to see Fantasia. I loved that film. I wonder if I’d have to join Netflix to get it, since Bread and I owe the local movie rental place, like, sixty bucks in late fees.

Since DNS is still updating, I won’t be moving goblinbox.com today. Probably tomorrow. (I’ve got everything moved, but LISCO isn’t authoritative yet, so even if I do DNS traffic won’t be pointed to the new server anyway.)

I might swing by the office tomorrow and backup the database one final time — don’t want to lose any comments! — and point traffic to the new server then. Hopefully this move will be smoother than most have been. I’m really hoping Rants 9 will work right off the bat and I won’t lose yet another batch of brilliant posts!

WB checks from Deluxe

In other news, I totally cheesed out and ordered cartoon checks today. I’ve been carrying those bland safety yellow ones for a couple of years now so I decided to get something colorful. I’m such a corndog.

Music for the Big Move

In which I totally didn’t put my refund into savings. Also: music, massage, my uterus, and moving the ‘box to a new server.

I got my $100 refund from Iowa this week, so I promptly spent it on two CDs and a massage! woot!

MUSIC

Bombay Dub OrchestraBombay Dub Orchestra: Bombay Dub Orchestra Recently, Comfort Music turned me onto a few tracks from this CD and I dug ’em so much I had to buy the whole thing. It’s eastern Indian pop, basically, and if you know me you know I love me some eastern Indian pop.

The first CD is entitled ‘bombay’ and I’ve already heard three of the 12 tracks. The second CD is called simply ‘dub’ and features eight remixes of the material on the first CD. I’m ripping it into iTunes now and am really excited to hear it.

The TourniquetMagnet: The Tourniquet I intend to buy all the Magnet albums I can find, starting with this one. (I love Magnet.) I’m still listening to the unfamiliar tracks on this one; it’s so exciting to have fresh goodies on one’s iPod.

Nod to The Rex Monday… again… for turning me on to Magnet in the first place.

MASSAGE

My massage therapist, who also happens to be Amazon Blonde, totally fucking rocks. She has a heated pad for her table, so I got to lie there in wonderful warmth while she worked on me. She’s really good at what she does, and her warm table kept me from feeling too crampy. She’s going to turn her front room into a massage room. I told her I’d bring her all of my mellow CDs to play when she’s working.

I loved that warm table, so soothing. When I got up, though, the Cramps From Hellâ„¢ arrived like an avalanche. I popped 500mg of acetaminophen and drove home. On the way, before the meds kicked in, I was all shaky and watery and trembly and felt like my guts were tied in knots.

BLEEDING

At home, I didn’t have any more Tylenol, so I waited seven hours before taking any ibuprofin because I didn’t know if you could take them both at once. This means I spent the time from nine to eleven last night rocking and crying and moaning and being in pain. Then I took a pill, but it didn’t help. Twenty minutes later I took another — for a total 400mg of ibuprofin — and was able to fall asleep.

“Some women experience increased menstrual pain in their late 30s and 40s as their endocrine systems prepare for menopause by decreasing hormone levels and thus fertility… An estimated 10 percent to 15 percent of women experience monthly menstrual pain severe enough to prevent normal daily function at school, work, or home.”

It’s called dysmenorrhea. The pain. And yes, it is excessive. Quite.

‘Normal aging,’ my ass.

MOVING

In other news, the ‘box is moving — for real. I’ve got much of my crap moved to the new server, I’ve regained control of DNS for the domain, and I’ll probably stay late tonight after work and finish the move so I can update DNS tomorrow morning. When Rants is back up, you’ll know the move is done. You may get errors trying to visit goblinbox.com tomorrow or over the weekend, depending on how fast DNS propegates and how well I test my apps before moving over.

Moving the 'box. Again.

In which when I grow up, I want my own server.

Keef is moving again, which means goblinbox.com is moving again. Possibly even this week sometime. I want to move because I can no longer run Gallery on this box due to the new restrictions since the hack, but I also equally don’t want to move because it can be a total pain in the arse.

This site is big. I mean, it ain’t no amazon.com or nothin’ — but for a personal site, it’s pretty big.

Thank God I work at the Internet, is all I have to say. Fast fast fast connections. Yum.

In other news, this amuses me every time I see it.

Geek Stuff

In which I tell you technical crap you probably don’t care about.

I’m trying to move this site from one of LISCO’s old Cobalts over to the outsourced server. Thing is, the site’s got a secure form on it and I don’t really know shit about SSL/HTTPS. I activated SSL on the new server, fine. But the secure form? Was built in FrontPage, which I loathe and hate. And which, incidentally, doesn’t seem to be allowed to connect to the secure folder on the target server. If I disable FP extensions so I can connect using FTP to upload the form, it won’t work. But I can’t seem to upload it with FP.

Good thing I enjoy a challenge.

I’m also the webmistress for the Amma Fairfield Satsang. I let both of its domains expire because I couldn’t find my fucking login for 000domains.com, which is where I registered the domains. I finally got in (more or less accidentally) and renewed them, but now one of the sites can’t find it’s MySQL database, probably due to some DNS problem and/or some side effect of the domain having been disabled. Believe me, this is a total pain in the ass, especially since I can’t remember the cPanel login nor the FTP login. They should both be saved in my password app, but they’re not. Which means either that I’m a slob or that I accidentally overwrote the app’s db when synching with my PPC. Ugh.

Technology, as much as I adore it, does not really make things easier.

In other news, it’s fucking nice outside and I absolutely love not being cold. I love rolling out of bed without wincing and shivering. I love standing outside the back door while brushing my hair. I love Iowa in the spring, it’s so balmy and sweet.

And for no reason whatsoever, this is a picture of some farmer’s random spring brush fire I drove past the other day:

Burn Pile
