by Oscar Wilde

“My dear boy,” said Lord Henry, smiling, “anybody can be good in the country. There are no temptations there. That is the reason why people who live out of town are so absolutely uncivilized. Civilization is not by any means an easy thing to attain to. There are only two ways by which man can reach it. One is by being cultured, the other by being corrupt. Country people have no opportunity of being either, so they stagnate.”

I take it this has some personal meaning for you? đŸ˜‰

No personal meaning at all. The last time I lived in the country myself, I was a coke fiend. It’s so much easier to be corrupt absolutely anywhere nowadays! *giggle* -m

“Civilization will never attain perfection until the last stone, from the last church, falls on the last priest”.

Who said that? Someone from a Christian background, I’d wager. -m

    Emile Zola said it.

Reading TPODG now… I must say, I really like Wilde’s style. Feel like discussing it when I’ve finished?

    Absolutely! I’ll email you. -m
