eyeOS

eyeOSToday I installed eyeOS. It’s a web-based OS. It’s really cute. It could grow up to be pretty neato someday.

Right now, I have literally no idea what to do with it.

But you can play with it by clicking here and logging in with guest / guest. There’s a text editor, an address book, a browser, a calculator, and cute wallpaper. Have fun!

MySQL Help!

I have two backups for comments on my blog. I need to merge them, but I can’t figure out how – if I import one file, it overwrites whatever was there, so I either end up with one set of comments (several years worth, from the beginning until nine days ago) or the other set (comments for the last nine days).

Any of you database geeks willing to help me out?

Possible Outage

My web host will be changing while I’m on vacation, which means goblinbox.com might be down for a few days. If this happens, please don’t panic, and I’ll get it sorted out eventually… hopefully without any loss of content.

I’m going to try to back up and/or move everything tomorrow, but I don’t have high hopes for getting it finished (since I’ll be packing to travel and organizing things to leave my household unattended for six days, and having a visit to the dentist).

Moving one’s web site can be a royal pain in the ass.

I’ll be in New York from the 14th through the 19th.

Crash

My work computer has died a hard death. I think it’s the motherboard, but at first it looked like hard drive failure. So I put in another hard drive and got the same error: “Capable, but disabled.” It can’t use the HDD.

I just rebuilt my work computer last week, meaning I spent a day and a half backing up files and fdisking and reinstalling Windows. Meaning I have a full and recent back-up, so the fact that my box ate my hard drive isn’t upsetting me too terribly awfully much…

…but there’s really not a lot around here with which to build myself a new box. We’ve got tons of stuff in here, but it’s mostly old crap. Right now I’m sitting at the back-up server blogging. How much of a big fat dork am I?

BSOD replaced by hard boots

Last year, my home box would stall and go to a blue screen that bitched about its core dump status, which was ‘interesting’ enough.

But now the box hard boots itself at random intervals, at least once a day. (Yes, I’m running AC. I thought it was a heat problem too.) It’s so exciting when you’re in the middle of something and the box clicks and starts running boot screens!

I’m so close to buying that Mac mini I can practically taste it.

Briefcase

Remember the Briefcase function on Windows 95 that would synchronize the contents of a folder? It was handy if you had a file you wanted to maintain on more than one computer.

Now there’s FolderShare.com – file sync, folder syncing, file transfer, share files, web download, access files anywhere.

It’s close to what I want, but it’s not quite Briefcase. I wanna keep files on a thumbdrive and have them automatically synched on my work and home machines! Waah!

Migration Halted

So the new server I told you about, with the missing modules? The one goblinbox was migrating to? Well, that’s cancelled.

The ISP had failed to install something, and wiped the entire box in the process of fixing the problem. This so enraged Keef and Liz – they’d each already moved all their clients – that they yanked the box altogether and are looking for another place to locate the server. And goblinbox won’t be moving for a bit. Can you see my relief in between the pixels?

Gallery Is Grumpy

Gallery is pissing me off. There’s only so much you can do to the layout using CSS – some of the stuff’s done with HTML and I can’t figure out how to edit it. There aren’t any obvious templates in the app’s files, and all I can find are fairly gay skins that I don’t like.

But it does work well, I have to give it that. Gallery does rock in terms of functionality. I’ll just have to find some layout hacks.
