Fun Mix

I desperately want to blog and be amusing, but my head’s quite literally empty. Must have something to do with the distractingly warm summer wind and getting over the flu, and the fact that I’m rapidly becoming too tan to even need to be intelligent or witty.

Well, not really. I’m not THAT tan.

Yet.

Today’s earworm is Chaka Khan’s Live In Me, off of the album Masterjam (1979). It’s your basic full-on Rufus ‘n Chaka disco groove with dirty lyrics, and it’s thumpin’ and I love it. It’s stuck in my head because I spent all day yesterday listening to this fabulously weird and terribly European mix I downloaded off this blog called troubled diva. I have no idea what the guy actually does for a living, but I swing by his site occassionally because he posts these 1-to-2 hour mixes once in awhile that have all kinds of crazy fun stuff in them, like French and Indian pop.

The mix one I’m obsessing on right now is called Back To Mine #1 and it’s here, and you could even download it for yourself —

— if only I could remember my own fucking directory password! (Yeah, yeah, I think I’m so clever with my nifty little .htaccess file, and then I go and forget the damn password. Soon as I remember it, I’ll post it so you can get in and download yourself an hour’s worth of fun mix.)

Happy Anniversary

…to me! And my beloved!

Apparently we’ve been married – what, four, five years now? (I think we got married in 2001, so that would be four years. I know it sounds pretentious to not remember what year a girl was married, but I seriously don’t. I’d look it up on our marriage license, but that’s all the way downstairs fer chrissakes.)

All I gotta say is it seems way longer than four years. Snort!

Sunblock

I blew off Gita class last night, went to the store after work for about $9 worth of sundries, and drove home. I made pasta and salad for dinner, and my redheaded man came home in a MUCH better mood. (As a matter of fact, he even got laid. Lucky boy.)

I told him he was a total asshole the night before and he said, “Yeah I guess I kinda was!” and giggled at me. He GIGGLED. God I love redheads, cool-looking psychotic things that they are.

I told him yet again he should wear sunblock, but he won’t do it. He works construction, fer chrissake, and is apparently spending quite a bit of time out in the sun lately. He’s turning that color redheads turn: a painful, glowing fuscia that screams “HI THERE! I HAVE NO MELANIN! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PUT SUN BLOCK ON ME!!!”

Last summer (or was it the summer before?) I bought him a tube of high-SPF, unscented, waterproof sunblock. It’s still sitting on top of the medicine cabinet in the downstairs bathroom.

I will have no sympathy for him when he gets skin cancer on his red neck.

Okay, okay, I probably will – seeing as how I love him so and all. But STILL. Such a stubborn fucker, that man of mine! (And me so FLEXIBLE and REASONABLE.)

Grumpy Man

My husband was in a really grumpy mood last night. I mean really grumpy. So grumpy, in fact, that I don’t believe we said a single word to each other for the three hours before bed.

Ah, life with a redhead!

I was napping when he got home from work, because I was having some anxiety and if I can get to sleep for a bit it takes the edge off. I woke when he got home, came downstairs, and we had our usual “How was your day?” conversation. He was cranky. He said he was hungry and that he needed cigarettes because I had stolen his pack the night before.

Stolen? We’re married, dude. I can’t steal your shit. Plus you TOOK the pack I’d stolen and left me the last few in your old pack this morning. “You always take my extra packs,” I said.

“Yeah, well, I had this one over here on purpose,” he said, indicating ‘his’ sidetable in the living room, implying that if they’d been communal smokes they’d have been in the usual place on top of the fridge, when we both know they never would have been because he’s never in his life bought extra cigarettes and left them on top of the fridge. “I knew I wasn’t going through Fairfield today to buy any,” he said. “So I put them here.”

(We smoke American Spirit cigarettes, and they’re not sold everywhere. There are three places in Fairfield to buy them, and one place in Ottumwa. Other than that, they’re hard to come by in rural Iowa.)

Ah. I see. So you can take my cigarettes at will, but I’m a bitch when I take yours.

Noting his shitty mood and bad vibe and trying to be flexible, I said that I could either cook or we could go to town for dinner since we were going for smokes anyway, and added that “if we went to town, we could go to the Dairy Bar for malts!”

Moments later he was on his phone in the driveway while I loaded the dogs into his truck. Then I got in myself, and he finished up his call and got in too. Less than a mile from the house, he complained, “I don’t know where the fuck you think we’re gonna eat, with two dogs in the truck and the windows won’t roll up.”

I smacked myself in the head, grinned, and said, “Oh shit, I’m sorry. I forgot. We’ll have to get drive-thru.”

“I don’t want to eat drive-thru,” he retorted.

Brett’s truck has electric windows, and the driver’s side window no longer rolls up. This is why electric windows suck.

“Did the other window stop working, too?” I asked.

“No!” he growled. “You think rolling one up will fucking help keep Meathead in the fucking truck?”

“No,” I replied icily. “I was just asking if both windows were broken.”

I turned to look out the window. The rest of the ride to town was silent. I did not point out that he’d watched me load the dogs into the truck, nor that we were so close to home at that point that he could just TURN THE TRUCK AROUND AND DROP THE DOGS OFF AT HOME.

In town, we stopped at Mi-T-Mart for gas and smokes. I gave Brett half the cash I had – money he’d given me several days earlier for the household and which I’d been hoarding – so he’d be able to buy lunch for the rest of the week.

Driving back down Burlington, I made another attempt and said, “I’m not that hungry. I’d be happy to sit in the truck while you went in to eat somewhere. I really wouldn’t mind.” This was something of a sacrifice on my part, because I knew I had nothing new to read on my PPC and would have to spend the time re-reading something I’d already read, but I was willing to do it.

Brett said, “Dairy Bar?” and pulled into its driveway and parked.

Digging through my purse, I asked, “Vanilla malt?”

“Yeah,” he said, attempting to sound decent. I think my honest offer to wait for him to eat had actually hit home.

So I stood in line with a bunch of appallingly young, healthy, athlete-type high school kids and was eventually able to purchase two large malts. They cost $4.98.

Returning to the truck, I handed Brett’s malt to him, and we were driving again. Neither of us said a word the whole way home. I went immediately to the kitchen and made him pork chops with onions, thyme, and garlic, and a fava bean salad with chopped tomatoes, peppers, feta, thyme, olive oil and red wine vinegar. I served him in the living room (he won’t eat at the table).

He ate. I finished my butterscotch malt.

I tried once or twice to comment on the show we were watching – some Discovery show about the technology of logging – but while he made eye contact when I spoke to him he didn’t bother to reply. Eventually I went outside to read and smoke a couple of cigarettes. He’d gone to bed by the time I came back in.

Here’s hoping he’s in a better mood tonight. Yesterday was his first day on a new job, and if he’s like this for the next six months I’ll have to poison his meatloaf.

Blogs

I spend time every week going to every blog I read to catch up on people.

Some of you I know personally. Some of you are on my blogroll because you’re fucking brilliant writers, or because we have something in common like knitting or I just get a good vibe from you. Some of you are just plain old funny, like Dooce and some of the gay blogs I’m addicted to.

I am however quite pissed off at those of you who are so busy living your lives (one assumes) that you don’t update your damn blogs: Bucket, Buzz, Chrispizza, Matt, Keef, .frank – you know who you are!

An opinion piece

Have I mentioned lately that I hate the hospital?

I don’t hate them for letting me hemorrhage in their emergency room for over an hour , thereby forcing me to sign myself out and go to another hospital for help (I was having a horrible miscarriage a few days short of my second trimester). I don’t even hate them for sending me a bill.

But I DO hate them for siccing their lawyers on me and forcing me to delete the blog post in which I described that horrible two-hospital miscarriage. They’ve been harassing me, my employer, and my hosts with inaccurate, insipid crap. To wit:

Re: www.goblinbox.com/blog/archives/000446.html

Dear Ms. O’Connell,

Our office represents {name removed}, a hospital located in
Fairfield, Iowa. Enclosed with this letter is a copy of a blog published
by Michelle Morgan. Federal law as well as your Acceptable Use Policy
prohibits the publishing of defamatory information. The headline,
“{name removed} Tried to Kill Me” is clearly defamatory
within thte meaning of Iowa defamation law. Please advise within five
days of the receipt of this letter whether or not you will take action
to eliminate this posting which is clearly defamatory of {name removed}.

Sincerely,

Edwin N McIntosh
Dorsey & Whitney LLP

Uh huh. Rrrrright. OMG, where to even begin!

1. “a blog published by Michelle Morgan”
My name isn’t Michelle Morgan. Hasn’t been for years.

2. “The headline, ‘{name removed} Tried to Kill Me'”
The headline DID NOT read “{name removed} Tried to Kill Me”. I changed it weeks ago in an effort to comply with their bitch-ass requests.

3. “as well as your Acceptable Use Policy”
The host’s AUP does NOT prohibit the publishing of defamatory information. Go look it up.

4. “which is clearly defamatory of {name removed}.”
The post is NOT “clearly defamatory.” IT IS CLEARLY AN OPINION PIECE, you dolts! No one reading my blog would suspect that the hospital’s actual intent was to do murder, and I have every right to state my opinion, even ON THE INTERNET, about experiences with any businesses, yes, even hospitals. (Hello! Read the Constitution lately?)

I’m especially pissed off because I want that post in my archives even more than I want to post “negative” stuff about {name removed}. This blog is my diary, I’ve been writing in it for years, and I want it intact. That’s why I had my lawyer contact them to let them know I’d already {1} removed their name from the post, {2} had the cached version deleted from Google, {3} deleted Penny’s comments, and {4} put no-follow in the meta tags, all in an effort to comply with their desire to hide my totally constitutional opinion from search engines.

In effect, I bent way the hell over backwards for the incompetents who let me bleed for over an hour in their e-room to comply with their totally non-legal demand that my opinion be wiped off the ‘net because they simply did not LIKE it. Were they happy? NOOOO, they were too low tech to understand what I’d done for them, and the bossy little creeps had to have the post DELETED. And it’s not like I have the budget to launch a constitutional court case. Scylla and Charybdis.

This stupid letter caused Rackspace to give me (by way of Keef) 24 hours to comply before they’d turn off the server. Apparently any ol’ letter from any ol’ lawyer – legal or not – makes them ask, “How high?”

Nevertheless – the post is gone. And now there’s a big goddamned hole in my pregnancy archives and I’m PISSED. (Do you have any idea how many women hit all my old miscarriage posts in a week? Do you have any idea how comforting it is to read the blogs of women who have already been through whatever it is that you’re going through when you type “loss of pregnancy symptoms” into a search engine late at night?)

Before, I was just someone who had had a bad experience with them. NOW, I’M AN ENEMY. I will tell my friends bad things about them. Oh yes I will. I will say, “Don’t go there if you need medical help! Drive to the next county!”

This post is clearly NOT defamatory within the meaning of Iowa defamation law. This post is neither malicious nor damaging. It is factual and accurate and contains my opinions. If it comes up in search engines, that’s because THE SEARCH ENGINE WORKS.

The Saga Continues

{Shitty local hospital} finally figured out where goblinbox is hosted, and sent Rackspace a “remove the post or else” letter. Rackspace contacted my friend Keef, from whom I’m getting hosting, and said, “The post goes or we gotta turn the server off tomorrow.” (Yeah, right.)

So the post is gone. I deleted it.

I did this only because Keef’s got a bunch of other sites on the same server, and I just could not let his revenue go away in that manner. That would just be totally bitchy.

But let it be known that I. Am. Well. And. Truly. Pissed. The. Hell. Off. The post didn’t even have the {shitty local hospital}’s NAME in it any more, and it got absolutely NO TRAFFIC in the past two weeks. NONE. They’re pursuing this because they’re low-tech morons who’ve decided to harass me because I told a true story.

I hate them now. Before, I was fairly indifferent. Now I officially hate them, and I will tell every single person I ever meet never to go there for care. Ever.

Damn!

Last week, or the week before, I was surfing blogs. I started at Colorado Knits, then wandered off to see some of the blogs he reads, then the blogs those bloggers’ read… since it was a slow day at work eventually I ended up at some guy’s blog and downloaded, for the hell of it, a 97MB MP3 mix.

I finally took the MP3 home yesterday and listened to it, and It. Was. Cool. And I want more! But I can’t for the fucking life of me find the place I downloaded it from.

The MP3 is called “renamed_Back To Mine 1.mp3” and it’s a weird mix of French and Indian pop, Prince (Pink Cashmere), and ambient groove. This is why my new del.icio.us account is important so totally fucking indispensable.

Lame-o

If you’ve known me long enough, you’ve thought of me as lame at least once. This is because I often don’t show up, or I don’t call, or I’m just lame in general.

I’ve been this way forever.

Sometimes I get really enthused and throw off the lame yoke for awhile. Case in point is the recording project I just did. They asked me for three weeks of commitment and I gave that. But when the project extended past that deadline, I reverted to lameness.

To wit: Sunday night Greg called and wanted me to come to town right then and rerecord eight bars of “oooh”s over the intro to a song called “I Am”. I declined, but said I’d go the next morning. They wanted me there at 9:30.

Monday morning early I got in a fight with my DH and went back to sleep after he left for work. I didn’t get up again until 11:30. (I was tired. I don’t usually sleep that late any more, but I take it when I can get it these days.) My cell phone was dead and I spent a few hours running errands in town with my dad, totally and completely spacing the recording thing.

That evening Christina emailed me to see if I was dead or something because Greg hadn’t been able to find me all day. I emailed her back. Then Greg emailed. I said I’d sneak out of the office this morning to go record, as long as it could be done in half an hour. I never heard back. I think the master finally went to Iowa City, sans eight bars of “oooh”s over the intro to one song.

So I mangaged, at the very last minute, to lame out on even this project. Gack!

JCGBs

{continued from the previous entry}

Brett went home, and I retrieved my dad from the bar. He said, “It’s Saturday night, and I have money!” He held up a wad of bills. “Let’s do something!”

I remembered that Misty had called before the show to tell me to break a leg and also to say she was working the door at The Backroads for Steve’s band that night. So I took my dear ol’ dad over to The Backroads, and we stayed there until last call.

I sang two songs with The Jefferson County Green Band. The first one was the same one I always do whenever they ask me to sit in, a VERY SLOW twelve-bar blues in G starting with a walk-down from the five: Rock Me Baby. I was totally warmed up from the previous gig and nailed that fucker to the wall, if I do say so myself.

When I walked away from the band, no fewer than four people tried to buy me drinks. I let the bartender buy me one, since she had ahold of my arm at the time. She told me I’d given her goosebumps and that, “Only one other singer has ever done that to me, and that was twenty-two years ago!” She did not like the fact that I wasn’t attached to a band and that she couldn’t come see me play. She told me I could sing in her bar (she was the owner) any goddamned time I wanted to, end of discussion. She also made me a hellaciously (sp?) stout Scarlet O’Hara.

I spent most of the evening dancing, nursing my two drinks, and socializing. My dad danced his ass off. Travis Buch slipped on a peanut shell and hit the deck, shattering a cocktail glass. Janna was there. LeRoy was there and kissed me about twelve times. I worked the door for Misty at one point, and sold a JCGB t-shirt to LeRoy’s woman for him. I yelled at the band’s new sax player, “I’ve been playing in bands in this town on and off for fifteen years, and I just wanna know: WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN?!?!” and scared him off. I explained to another guy that the band DID NOT KNOW Summertime, and that was why I would not be getting up there to sing it with them any time soon. I explained to a drunk woman on the dance floor that her cuddlybunny was in the bathroom and would probably be right back, and then handed her off to someone else.

The second song I sang was Stormy Monday. Sort of. They didn’t quite have the changes right, which made it pretty fun and interesting. The sax player wailed over the form during his solo as if the song had been written like that, but personally I hit a few sour notes because expecting the chord to be different. Snort!

All in all, it was a really fun time, there at The Backroads. It was so fucking loud in there, and I danced so hard that I managed to forget about the never-ending panic attack from hell for a few hours, and was free of it until the next day. Yay!
