I think the whole problem with this era is the people in it.

Seriously.

No discipline, no restraint, no one knows how to listen or be compassionate. Everyone’s convinced that her way is the only way, and that other ways are wrong.

People say things like, “This beheading is a good act because the Iraqis have been oppressed and whoever is oppressed should defend themselves. As a Muslim I support this act,” and they mean it.

‘An eye for an eye’ is the slogan of a weak creature, one who is ignorant. All pain is answered; repaying pain with pain will always and forever fail to create anything other than more pain.

We’re all certain that what we believe is better than what the other guy believes. We all, each and every one of us alive right now, are guilty of this, and this lack of depth and character is what enables us to do things like behead ‘enemies’ on video tape and distribute copies to the world! It’s what enables Bush and followers to really believe they are “doing the right thing” in “liberating” Iraq from itself and its own karma.

The fact is that we all carry around an archetype, a leftover if you will, in which a strong and just one rescues a weak (and also just) one from tyranny.

The problem is that today none of us are just – so the archetype no longer works, even while it continues to inform our every behavior. We all think we’re the just one, and that our enemies are the unjust ones. We all think we’re right.

Yet what we currently call a strong id and a well-balanced ego is, in fact, a childish state of unnatural certainty… a state lacking vision, breadth, and compassionate love. So: the entire world is populated by crazy people.

We lack – particularly here in the West, but everywhere we lack – the gentler qualites of trust, love, compassion, non-judgement, and self reliance: a truly self-reliant creature doesn’t worry what others are doing because she’s already fulfilled, and doesn’t need to go out and fix everything to achieve fulfillment.

America should stay home. Everyone else should stay the fuck home too. If we as a world could just focus on raising up some truly nice kids, that would be enough.
